Summer time in Boston

June 23, 2024

It is hot as hell. And humid as hell, in Boston. It’s refreshing, more so if you’re in a neighborhood with greenery. I currently do not, so I turn into a salamander from a rainforest when I’m around lush green. Make it a windy day like today, pushing around the wet air pregnant with stank and earth. I miss it.

The Fens, the Emerald Necklace, the Esplanade. Beautifully manicured parks but they all seem like overgrown shorelines. Especially on a day like this when you want to be out. The Victory Gardens (and its smaller cousin in the South End Berkeley Community Garden) are exemplary examples of urban gardening.

Plots upon plots of flowers and bushes and gnome statuettes. But even here it’s so tiny, a cute little attraction along the water. And not for everyone. Imagine so many more plots just for gardening and some farming? All over the city? It would be so beautiful and so many more neighborhoods would have respite from the heat and the ability to grow beautiful and productive things.
